Pioneering. Diverse. Genuine. No, we're not talking about Sir Roger Moore's attempt at James Bond (one word spoken in anger against the man and you'll be for it), we're referring to the one and only Shambala Festival, returning this year over the August Bank Holiday, 22nd–24th

Widely respected, this Northamptonshire offering – created by five friends way back in 1999 – has lots to offer the discerning festival-goer. Shambala is devoutly anti-corporation and you won't find a single piece of branding anywhere on site.

As a consequence, the festival takes on a very, 'salts of the earth' kind of vibe, together with its community atmosphere – harking back to a sense of sociable spirit common in mass gatherings throughout history.

Attendees are invited to contribute activities which have, in the past, included: cabaret, knitting circles, ukulele lessons and, err, freestyle gurning competitions – while remaining safely on the happy side of pretentious throughout, phew. Check here for a better picture.

There is of course, music, to accompany the shenanigans and this year proves to be quite a soundtrack. The line-up remains secret at present but previous artists have included: The Bees, Alice Russell and Bent. Over 100 acts will be hitting the many stages and venues – think reggae, drum & bass, blues, jazz and world beats fused with cutting-edge DJs.

The eclecticism keeps coming in droves with the wealth of things to do away from the party. There's a roller-disco, a healing area, plenty of honest food and films to name but a few of the things going on.

Topped off with it's beautiful setting in the grounds of a Victorian manor, surrounded by thick woods, Shambala is shaping up to be a serious contender among the deluge of summer events – don't miss it.
