Birmingham Back-to-Backs
The last surviving court of back-to-back houses in Birmingham, from the time when pissing in buckets and emptying it out the window was the norm. Located, err, back-to-back, on Inge Street and Hurst Street, the houses are a stark insight into the development of urban housing in answer to the social upheaval brought with the Industrial Revolution. Timed tickets will get you on an endearing guided tour by some of the old blokes who used to live and work here, only too happy to tell their story of the site from 1840 to the late 1970s. National Trust members can get in free.
